Have you Ever?

Have you ever sat down at a restaurant and almost instantly starting praying that you don't contract something like, oh say, food poisoning or hepatitis or one of many things one can get from eating at a restaurant that looks like maybe it wouldn't pass subjective health code standards...that were really low.

Well, in the quest to find the perfect hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant in our new town we have been sampling around.  Yesterday we took a chance on a little local place that always looks packed....good sign right?  We went in and saw that it was in fact busy.  OK it's not your typical chain with all the razzle dazzle but it seemed ok...at first glance...which I should remind myself to take longer, more discerning first glances.

We sat ourselves, were served salsa and chips, ordered our food, with somewhat of a language barrier so I wasn't really sure what either of us was getting or how much we were paying,  and then Charlie and I proceeded to have this exact conversation:

Me: So this isn't a fancy place but the salsa is pretty good.

Charlie: UUhh, yeah....

Me: (crunchy crunching as I inhale half a basket of chips with salsa)

Charlie: Hey did you break off part of a chip in here? (referring to the salsa)

Me: No, did you?

Charlie: uuuh, no

uncomfortable, awkward shifting in seats

Me: so are you saying you think they take these salsa dishes off the tables when people leave and just "top them off" in the back and then give them to the next customer?

looking around uncomfortably...taking it all in

Charlie: yeah maybe

EEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!

Ok so overall, the food was mediocre...and not served super hot and the mystery chip in the salsa was a strike, but the clincher was the can of soda which did not provide free refills...we drink lots when we eat salsa and chips and one can of drink isn't gonna cut it.  So there you have it...this place is definitely a "oncer" and it is officially crossed off the list.

..and for the record I'm still hoping upon hope that I do not come down with some raging stomach issues...... from salsa sharing with the general public.....which is probably not likely...... but did keep me up last night....kidding!

P.S. I have not abandoned Mamacitas, but she's kind of far away from me for a regular visit.  And yes, to my Valdez folks, I know 30 minutes isn't far...everything is relative.

All I can say is EWWWWWWWW!!!! I probably would have gotten up and left....hate to take a chance like that! Our favorite mex place in TX was Tia's...more tex mex that regular mexican, and definitely more Americanized that authentic. But, they had GREAT margaritas!! The food was pretty good, too! Glad you are settling in.

OK.. I am a super chips and salsa fan (hello.. Carlos O'kelly's Where are you?)and I draw the line at salsa sharing-- and I would have to say I would rage holy guacamole if there was a chip fiasco like that... I would have had to ole 'ed the heck outta there... (but, if the salsa was good.....? What did a little double dippin ever do to anybody? Just Joking (kinda)

They need a MEXICO around there. It is only the most delicious Mexican restaurant in all of VA or if you ask me the WORLD!!!! Although its not real authentic, Chilis has the best "non-real" salsa around!!

Holy frijoles! So, right about now are you guys having flashbacks of Ernesto's? I thought of the heavyset blond waitress this week and then got hungry for the #7 with chicken. Glad to hear somebody was having Mexican food!
