Going to POPO

You know the POPO Family Restaurant in Welfare, TX....doesn't sound familiar???  Hmmm..Folks around here know it well. It's been around since 1929 when it was originally a dance hall and a spot to buy moonshine during prohibition.  During the Depression the dance hall went out of business.  It has changed hands many times but sometime around the 1950's it became a family restaurant. Click on the link up there to read more about this place and to take a look at the menu.

Two report cards ago Brooke and Zach got free dinners here and we had yet to use them.  Last night baseball was cancelled..rain, swine flu, humidity, take your pick of reasons...so we decided to head out to POPO.  The website says reservations recommended which I thought was a ridiculous notion, because we had driven by before and frankly it didn't look like that big a deal.  But Charlie called and made reservations...and nobody tells him I said this...pinky swear...good thing he did.  The parking area was full up.

We got there, got settled in and had about 7 minutes to take in the massive amounts of plates from all over the world...

before every seat was filled!!! The food was good!  Charlie had steak which was one of the best steaks he's ever eaten and Miles had the fried chicken which is one of their menu specials..also good.  Brooke and I had shrimp and Zach ordered catfish.  All in all it was yummy. It always feels great to support a local business and although it may have been cheaper to dine somewhere else (read: a little pricey for homecookin'), the atmosphere was fun and very friendly. Everyone else seemed to know each other...well!!

On the way back we took a bit of a scenic drive around Welfare and Waring and stumbled upon a very cute spot.  Believe me, we stuck out like sore thumbs with our Alaska tags, as usual.

While driving around, we discovered another potential dinner spot too.  A weekly Wednesday night BBQ at a ranch with live music...and from what I could see...possibly moonshine..I kid!  I'll be reporting on that soon as there is no way Charlie will be passing up an opportunity to try more BBQ...or moonshine...KID-DING!!

Finally, the best find of the evening may be this dead snake.  It, for whatever goofy reason, was quite exciting to all of us.

Has anyone ever been to a restaurnat with a better name than POPO?  Believe me when I say that was good for hours of fun when we first moved here.  I mean HOURS!!!!
