Miles had a great birthday celebration yesterday.
First of all let me say,
this kid is FANTASTIC!
14 years ago yesterday Charlie and I became parents for the first time and this kid has made our lives better and happier. We both remember, very distinctly, bringing him home, setting the car seat on the table and looking at Miles then at each other and thinking..."now what, what do we do, how do we take care of him and give him the best and love him so much and and and"... and then the doorbell rang and thank god our family was standing there because we were beyond happy and exhausted and so new at this. But he was a dream...ok he could have slept through the night..any night... in the first, oh, let's say 7 years but other than that he was so easy. He has always been an excellent student (could write his name when he was 2 and read by the time he was 4 and the kid has not stopped since), a fabulous friend and an all around wonderful human being. He is a dream teenager...I didn't say perfect, but he really does his best to be a fantastic kid and student and to bring a wonderful sense of humor and a pretty great attitude to our family. We are so proud of him for so many things, we can't even begin to put them all in writing...plus I'm starting to get teary so let's just talk about his big day yesterday.
Miles' day started off being served breakfast in bed - hot buttered croissant, banana, and yogurt. We presented him with his birthday sign and sang him a nice loud version of Happy Birthday. We then gave him the option of staying home from school and he said "naah"...he does "not want to have to make up work." LOVE THIS KID!!!
After school he opened his presents and was treated to so many nice things. Some great clothes, some outdoor sports gear, money, video games, and an OPEN sign. Miles has been asking for an OPEN sign for years...no one knows why except he thinks it will be fun in his room and now thanks to my sister Deanna and her family we never have to see that on his wish list again. Everybody wins!! After gifts Miles had his choice of a birthday dinner at any restaurant. {{Me with fingers crossed, chanting MA-MA-CI-TAS in my head, but no dice}}...he chose Cracker Barrel and hello..he is an inexpensive date...LOVE IT. We headed to dinner, which was yummy, and then back home to have cake and ice cream. I made Miles a chocolate cake with chocolate icing, as he requested, and it was delicious and a great end to a really fun day.
Zach wasn't here as he has been away on a school field trip so today, when he returns, there will be more presents and the rest of the cake...a little extended birthday celebration. It works for me and I know it works for Miles.
Thanks to everyone who sent birthday wishes, gifts, or just good thoughts.
